It is clear in the Freeh report that his superiors absolutely deferred to his judgment in this case. While he may have technically been "junior" it is a cop out by everyone to believe that a man who built Penn State and instilled the values of honor and integrity didn't know the right thing to do about the situation.
He may have built Penn State, but he also is responsible for its down fall. It is the height of hypocrisy that Mr. Integrity, Joe Paterno, couldn't do the "right thing".

I don't want to misinterpret your message, but Joe Paterno was not bigger than the institution, nor did he think he was; on the contrary. The institution was bigger than he was. In fact, as a result of him, in many respects. Yes, his money dontated over the years, but also the instilling of a community attitude; a winning attitude. The 'We are Penn State' pride that all present, alum and future students love, admire and dedicate to. Joe Paterno literally planted that seed to blossom to what it is today; through money and winning football.

With that said, he made a mistake in judgement, and his legacy is paying the price. I don't think it should, but it is. 60 years of history of who Joe PA was, and what he accomplished on and off the gridiron, has been virtually erased with one set of circumstances at the hands of someone else; Jerry Sandusky. It is truly ashame.

Penn State would have been nothing like what it is today without this man. It appears that the Penn States governing bodies are burying Joe Paterno's heritage along with the man himself.

I had the distinct honor to be the Commanding Officer of the Naval Medical Clinic, Quantico, VA, from October 1996 to October 2000. I witnessed so many young Marines pass through OCS and TBS during my 4 years. I felt so confident in the sovereignty of the US as I watched these young Marines graduate and cross the highway to TBS. I spent several tours with the Marines, including a tour as a Corpsman in Vietnam. I am so proud to have served with the United States Marine Corps.
CAPT David Gervais, MSC, USN (RET)

The handbook referred to in this post was written by Marine Gunner Walter Hooper. I cannot find much about him on the internet. My dad was selected to go through the first class of the First Sergeant School at Quantico. After graduation the school was moved to the Philadelphia Navy Yard where Dad served as an instructor at the school before going to the Pacific in WWII.
