Books on Leadership for Marines (by Grade)


The following books on leadership/military professional reading list are recommended, by grade, for Marines by the Lejeune Leadership Institute.


Pvt -LCpl:

The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America 
Written in 1776 in Philadelphia, PA the Constitution the backbone for our democratic government.

Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War 
A story of modern urban combat that takes place in Mogadishu in 1993 where an Army operation turns into a rescue mission.

The Killer Angels 
A gripping account of the Battle of Gettysburg that gives you a perspective from all of the major players of the battle.

Cpl-Sgt:

The Bridge at Dong Ha
Gives an account of one Captain’s courageous effort to defeat his enemy in the Vietnam war. 

The Red Badge of Courage 
Aa story told from the view point of a soldier at the Battle of Chancellorsville during the civil war.   

The United States Marines: A History
This book provides the history of the Marine Corps, from its birth to present.

SSgt:

Band of Brothers: E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne from Normandy to Hitler's Eagle's Nest
A war story that takes place in World War II that looks at the individual’s perspective and the big picture of the war. This book provides insights on leadership and the timeless lessons we learned.

The Village
This book is about a squad of Marines who lived in a large Vietnamese village during the height of the war with firefights occurring almost every night for two years.

Citizen Soldiers: The U. S. Army from the Normandy Beaches to the Bulge to the Surrender of Germany
This book gives a detailed account of WWII from the perspective of the soldier on the ground.

Command in War
This work takes a look at the history of commanders in war over the past two thousand years by analyzing the problems they had and the best solutions for them.

My American Journey
This work is a collection of memoirs from Colin Powell on his life experiences and professional development.

Unaccustomed to Fear: A Biography of the Late General Roy S. Geiger (MCA Heritage Library) 
A Biography of General Roy S. Geiger who led air and ground troops in WWII. 

MSgt-1stSgt: 

Defeat Into Victory: Battling Japan in Burma and India, 1942-1945
This book takes a look at the British victory against Japan in India during WWII.

MgySgt-SgtMaj: 

First to Fight: An Inside View of the U.S. Marine Corps
General Krulak has succeeded in telling the story his personal experiences in the Corps while capturing the entire history of the Marine Corps in this book.  

Fortune Favors the Brave

This is a story about the creation of Force Recon that takes place after WWII.

WO-1:

The Quiet American (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition)
A novel based in Vietnam just before the war breaks out, this book shows the escalation of the conflict through a story of a British journalist and an American.

Chesty: The Story of Lieutenant General Lewis B. Puller, USMC 
A detailed biography on Lewis B. Puller’s life and military career.
 
The United States Marines: A History
This book provides the history of the Marine Corps, from its birth to present.

2ndLt: 

Chancellorsville 
A look at the battle of Chancellorsville, the historic significance and the death of one of the confederacies best Generals.

Easter Offensive: The Last American Advisors, Vietnam, 1972
This book takes a look at the very end of the Vietnam War and gives an account of the major attack conducted by the North Vietnamese after America’s pull out.  

1stLt/CWO-2: 

 A People Numerous and Armed: Reflections on the Military Struggle for American Independence
This book reflects on the effects of the American Revolution.

Company Commander: The Classic Infantry Memoir of World War II 
A compilation of memoirs from an Infantry officer’s point of view in WWII.  

The Ugly American
Strives to show the reader the way other countries peoples may view Americans and often the way Americans actually act in other countries. It focuses on Asia and some of the corruption that was happening at the time the book was written, 1958.

Utmost Savagery: The Three Days of Tarawa
An account of one of the bloodiest battles of WWII, the battle of Tarawa. This battle taught us the tough lessons we needed to learn about amphibious landings to be successful through the rest of the war.

Terrorism Today
This book takes a look at world wide terrorism; it’s past, present, and future.

Maj/CWO-4: 

A Bright Shining Lie  This book is about a Colonel’s account of the corruption of the South Vietnamese government during the Vietnam war and gives good reason why we couldn’t win that fight. 

For the Common Defense 
Rreveals the history of the American military, from the revolution to desert storm.


On War 
A war classic that sets the standard for books on the art of war.

Strategy: Second Revised Edition (Meridian) 
A classic work on strategy that rivals Clausewitz.

The General (Great War Stories)

A novel based on an officer who is coming to terms with his roll as a leader in WWI and trying to adjust to trench warfare. The officer portrayed here is an example of a person who manages to make it through his military career without studying his profession.

The Glorious Cause: The American Revolution, 1763-1789

An account of the American Revolution that separates fact from fiction and brings to little some little known truths about the era.

LtCol/CWO-5:

A Revolutionary People At War: The Continental Army and American Character, 1775-1783

This book not only takes a look at the history of the American Revolution but also the thought process and emotions of the American people.

Patton: A Genius for War

This book is a biography on one of America’s most well known generals, General George Patton.

Seven Pillars of Wisdom: A Triumph:
Tells the story of how Lawrence helped unit the Arab factions against the Turkish Army.

Abraham Lincoln and the Second American Revolution

Takes a look at the military leadership of Lincoln during and after the Civil War. 

All Quiet on the Western Front

This book takes a look at the ordeal of a German soldier and his friends as they suffer through WWI and trench warfare.

Carnage and Culture: Landmark Battles in the Rise to Western Power

Reviews the reasoning of why western culture has spread so well across the globe. The conclusion in the book is: western cultures are better at killing.  

War and Peace
War and Peace is a classic epic novel that takes place in Russia during the Napoleonic era.

Eisenhower's Lieutenants: The Campaigns of France and Germany, 1944-45

The author analyzes the European campaign of WWII and discuss some of the characteristics and traits of Eisenhower's subordinate leaders. This book also goes into some detail about the American army's conception of war during this time.

Inventing Grand Strategy and Teaching Command: The Classic Works of Alfred Thayer Mahan Reconsidered (Woodrow Wilson Center Press S.)A review of Captain Alfred Thayer Mahan’s books on naval strategy.
