"Spec Ops" By Adm William McRaven
The Raid to Kill Osama Bin Laden was formulated in the mind of William McRaven in 1995 when he published Spec Ops: Case Studies in Special Operations Warfare: Theory and Practice
. McRaven, now a Three Star, was the head of Joint Special Operations Command - responsible for executing the raid that killed Bin Laden after a 9 year hunt.
Spec Ops
, should be required reading for everyone remotely involved in Special Operations, including those in the MEUSOC program.
McRaven analyzes eight real world special operations (including the German raid at Eben Emael, the glider rescue of Mussolini, the U.S. Army Ranger WWII POW rescue at Cabanatuan POW Camp, The Son Tay POW rescue attempt in Vietnam and the Israeli raid on Entebbe Uganda). His analysis of both successful and unsuccessful raids uses the factors he deems critical to the success of any Special Operation.
Through his examples Adm. McRaven proves that having good leadership, and well trained and motivated operators isn't enough. In order to increase the chance for success every Special Operation should have: Simplicity, Security, Repetition, Surprise, Speed and Purpose of Action.
