The Legacy of Leadership

More than anything the legacy of the Marine Corps binds all Marines together.  It provides a great sense of pride and purpose from the Commandant to the most junior Private.

That legacy continues daily in the actions of Marines engaged in Combat.  Regardless of rank, or time in service every Marine is ever mindful not to let the Marine Corps, his buddies and those Marines who have gone before down.   As long as there is a Marine Corps that leadership legacy will be handed down for generations to come.

General Mattis, in his letter to 1st Marine Division, speaks directly to our legacy when he told his Marines "For the mission's sake, for our country's sake, and the sake of the men who carried the Division's colors in past battles "who fought for life and never lost their nerve" — carry out your mission and keep your honor clean. Demonstrate to the world there is “No Better Friend — No Worse Enemy” than a US Marine."

Senator Jim Webb, a former Infantry Officer, received the Navy Cross for actions in combat in Vietnam.  He has thought and written extensively on leadership and captures the meaning of the legacy of Marine Corps in the short video clip below.
